This post is from Out the Other's 2010 Bonnaroo Artist Previews, where I will be posting previews of all the musical acts playing the 2010 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Please check out and subscribe to the full site to learn more about all of this year's performers.
It's been four years since I checked in with Los Amigos Invisibles - I was first introduced to the Venezuelan party band in 2006 when my friend John handed me a copy of their most current album at the time, Superpop Venezuela, with the disclaimer that "this is really weird." Weird it was - and also eclectic, and danceable, and bright and bizarre and funky. Formed in 1991 with the mission to be the best dance band in Venezuela - and as an answer to the dark rock bands permeating their hometown of Caracas at the time - Los Amigos Invisibles have found success even outside of their country, in every nook and cranny that loves a good dance party.
And I know Los Amigos Invisibles are a good dance party, because I caught them at the Austin City Limits Festival back in 2006. Initially my friend and I wandered into the tent where they were performing just because we were seeking some shade, but soon we were just as sweaty as we had been in the sunshine. There is absolutely no way to listen to this band without dancing - and I'd like to issue that challenge to everyone looking for someone to listen to early Saturday evening at Bonnaroo. As a part of the lineup in the "Latino Alternativo" tent, this Venezuelan band will bring their mix of disco, acid jazz, funk, and Latin dance beats to adventurous ears at the festival.
2009 saw the release of the newest Los Amigos Invisibles album - Commerical - and it's no coincidence that the band's appeal is becoming more and more commercial. The record sees the band branching out from Spanish and Portugese to sing even more in English, and the diverse mix of sounds provides something every listener can enjoy. And shake their ass to.
Los Amigos Invisibles will play the Other Tent on Saturday at 5:15 p.m.
