This post is from Out the Other's 2010 Bonnaroo Artist Previews, where I will be posting previews of all the musical acts playing the 2010 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Please check out and subscribe to the full site to learn more about all of this year's performers.
Get yourself immersed in Bonnaroo previewing, and you'll find yourself delighted by the discovery of a fresh face, a fresh voice, a song or two that pauses you for even the briefest moment in your tracks. Lissie's 2009 debut EP, Why You Runnin', just did exactly that - grabbed my attention and made me want to hear more than just a five-song teaser.
I won't officially have that opportunity before Bonnaroo, but we will all have the opportunity to hear the extent of what Lissie has to offer on her forthcoming debut, Catching a Tiger, which will be out later in June (I believe it'll hit the UK before it hits here stateside). And I believe the diminutive singer, born and raised in Rock Island, Illinois, will have the ability to stop quite a few people in her tracks with her first full-length. She has a voice to rival the current pop titans, the chops to earn comparisons to classically great stars, and best of all, she seems to be doing something interesting with her voice. The range of styles on Why You Runnin' display a range of talent as well, and an artist that won't be easily pigeonholed into one specific sound.
Currently based in Ojai, California, Lissie is already hitting the UK festival circuit - the singer has found wider success overseas, where she's signed to Sony UK. Sets at Bonnaroo and the Austin City Limits Festival this year will bookend a summer filled with a UK tour, a Glastonbury gig, and a string of dates with Lilith Fair, where I expect this rookie might steal the show.
"Little Lovin'"
"Wedding Bells"
Lissie will play the Troo Music Lounge on Saturday night at 1:30 a.m.
Lissie is incredible. Her cover of "Bad Romance" almost makes the existence of Lady Gaga tolerable.
