Not only does everyone have their personal favorite Christmas songs, they also have their LEAST favorites - those songs that make them cringe every time they come on the loudspeakers at the mall. For me, "Little Drummer Boy" has always been a holiday song that annoys the CRAP out of me. Super repetitive, mildly annoying, not even redeemed by David Bowie when he paired up with Bing Crosby.
But last year, I came across a version of the song that wasn't just tolerable, it was actually lovely. Vandaveer - who was mostly unknown to me last year, but whose Divide & Conquer (and stunning live show at the Basement) swept me off my feet this year - takes "Little Drummer Boy" and carefully, delicately, with a soft piano and beautifully harmonized voices, strips the song to the quiet sweetness it can and should always be.
