#15 - Thee Oh Sees - "Enemy Destruct" (from Help)
Thee Oh Sees were one of the first bands I caught at this year's SXSW, and this song burrowed itself into my memory that night, so that when I picked up a copy of Help, I was instantly obsessed. Even when I stopped listening to the record regularly I kept coming back to this song.
#14 - Passion Pit - "Little Secrets" (from Manners)
Passion Pit had a great year in 2009, and I've seen tracks from Manners pop up on "best of" lists all over the place. Lots of people chose other songs on the album to include on their countdowns, but it's the sheer youthful exuberance of "Little Secrets" that makes it my favorite track on the album.
#13 - Say Hi - "Maurine" (Oohs & Aahs)
Somewhere over the course of 2009, Say Hi kinda crept in there with a really great album - Oohs & Aahs was the record that I sort of forgot about, but when I sat down to listen to it, it was like "ooh that song is great - aah that one is too." (Maybe that's where they album title came from? Ha.) But "Maurine" is an undeniably phenomenal song, and for some reason I am endlessly transfixed by the line "I can't come to your party cause I think that I'm dead." (For a long time I thought it was "I can't come to your party cause you think that I'm dead" which in my opinion, is way more entertaining.)
#12 - The Rural Alberta Advantage - "Don't Haunt This Place" (from Hometowns)
Deliciously perky and poppy and the stand-out on Hometowns, "Don't Haunt This Place" is best sung at the top of your lungs in dismally out-of-tune harmony while driving in your car. I love a song paced so that your heartbeat feels like it's struggling to keep up.
#11 - Micachu - "Golden Phone" (from Jewellery)
Speaking of heartbeats racing, yours will sound like a hummingbird's wings after dancing around the room to "Golden Phone." I never listened to Jewellery as much as I meant to this year - I didn't get a chance to dig in and really process the rest of the album - but this song was never far from my playlists or my ears.
