Apparently “new acoustic” is now a genre descriptor – at least according to a PR email that landed in my inbox recently. And joining the likes of Fleet Foxes and Blitzen Trapper in that freshly-created category is The Low Anthem, a Rhode Island-based trio that sounds equally informed by their acoustic peers and greats like Simon & Garfunkel and Bob Dylan.
Formed about two years ago after meeting at Brown University, the Low Anthem is comprised of Jocie Adams (clarinet), Ben Knox Miller (guitar, vocals) and Jeff Prystowsky (bass). While the band has been playing together for a relatively short period of time, they have already earned praise from Rolling Stone, NPR Music and the New York Times, and they are currently on tour with Ray Lamontagne and Elvis Perkins. I didn’t actually manage to catch one of their six sets at last month’s SXSW, but buzz from their performances has certainly warranted a spot on my bands-to-check-out list.
Nonesuch Records will re-release last year’s independently distributed Oh My God, Charlie Darwin on June 9 this year, just in time for the Low Anthem to celebrate with a trip to Manchester.
