Once during my sophomore year in college, my English professor told me he thought that The Strokes would save rock 'n roll.
I think Is This It sounds just as refreshing to me right now as it did to that professor seven years ago, though I'm betting it's for completely different reasons. Sometimes it's easy to forget that some of those dust-collecting CDs on your shelves are still as exceptional as they were years ago, before you kinda almost sorta maybe forgot about them in your quest to listen to anything and everything new.
I completely echo that sentiment, and I too love Is This It, even if it is cliche, obvious, etc. I love the songs and I think it's a wonderful sing-along album.
Just curious -- what do you think the "completely different reasons" are that you and your professor would have for your mutual appreciation of the Strokes?

English professors are always more inclined to be big music geeks than any other subject's professors. I once had one tell me he gave me a B minus instead of a C on an admitedly substandard paper because I titled it after a New Order b-side.

I remember this first time I heard the Strokes I hated them. I guess its that way with all good music. It takes a few listens to hear all the nuances that gives the music depth and longevity. 'Is This It' was like listening to some obscure Television B-Sides from the 70's. I recently popped in the disc for old times sake (7 years mind you)and loved it just the same. There are only a few cds I own in which I feel that way. Whether that's an indictment on my taste in music or the quality of music from the last decade and a half is up for debate, regardless The Strokes are an excellent band. And 'Is this It' is a timeless album.
