Say what you will about The Killers, but you have to admit they have some great, great songs. They also have some crappy songs, some cheesy songs, and what appears to be a jackass of a frontman. But Brandon Flowers has some writing skills to go along with his guyliner, which is even more evident when you hear Leif Vollebekk's take on what Flowers has called the best song he has ever written.
"Read My Mind" first appeared on the 2007 Killers album Sam's Town, and chances are it's familiar enough that you could sing part of it without me giving you any melodic cues. But I'm willing to bet you've never heard it like this - stripped down and slowed down and starkly emotional. It's the kind of cover that makes you forget the original.
This song first appeared as a bonus track on Vollebekk's North Americana LP, but last month the Montreal-based singer released it alongside four other covers as an EP aptly titled Borrowed Time. You can download the whole thing - which also includes his take on tracks from Sigur Rós, Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys and Neil Young - for free over here.
