Playlistarama (June 29 and July 6)

I'm behind on posting playlists (surprise surprise) so I thought I'd hit you with two in one post, along with oodles of mp3s.  The June 29 show was guest DJ-ed by Jon Rogers (it was a Harry Nilsson-ish show to promote the Harry Nilsson tribute at Mercy Lounge) and the July 6 show was hosted by D. June 8 show preview - BONNAROO! (but of course)

Juuuuust in case you haven't noticed - my life has been almost completely monopolized by Bonnaroo artist previews for the past few weeks.  And while I don't think I'm going to pull off previewing EVERY band playing this year's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival for my website, Out the Other's 2009 Bonnaroo Artist Previews is going to end up being pretty damn comprehensive come Wednesday night.  And that is absolutely 100% thanks to the loads of guest previewers I managed to recruit - together they're covering a ton of artists, and reading their previews has introduced me to more than a few acts I'm now completely pumped to check out at the festival in a few days.

But you have to remember the whole reason I tackled this project in the first place - I AM SO DAMN EXCITED ABOUT GOING TO BONNAROO.  In a few days, I'm going to see Gomez and Phoenix and MGMT and Animal Collective and the Dirty Projectors and Tobacco and White Rabbits and Wilco and Passion Pit and Grrizzly Bear, and my head is likely to explode from the awesomeness of it all.  I mean, I'm going to see BEASTIE BOYS, people.  BEASTIE BOYS.

So tonight on the show, I'm going to rock you with a little Bonnaroo preview action - not a formal rundown of the bands playing the fest, but a selfishly selfish look at the bands that I myself am most excited about seeing at the festival.  It's a two-hour Janet's-favorites pep rally of Bonnaroo-ey musical goodness, and just planning it has me wanting to pack up my tent and cartwheel my way down to Manchester.  One week from today, it's likely I'll be sunburnt and exhausted and filthy and nursing the kind of hangover that could floor a truckload of my famously liquor-holding Polish ancestors. But tonight, we're going to rock out and get ready.

I've also invited a handful of special guests (this IS the Summer of Guest DJs, after all) to chat about the acts they're most excited about seeing at Bonnaroo. We'll see who shows up.

So tune in!  7-9 p.m. on 91.1 or http://wrvu.org!

Playlist - June 1 - Rock and Roll Trivia

This Sunday will mark the third edition of Rock and Roll Team Trivia at the Mercy Lounge, a brand new event Drew Mischke, Ashley Spurgeon, Dave Paulson and I launched at the Mercy two weeks ago.  See, we play regular trivia weekly at a bar in my neighborhood, and one week Drew said "what if we did music trivia on Sunday nights at Mercy?"  I said it was a great idea, Drew asked me if I would help put it together, and the rest is history.

This week's trivia will be a little different (see: even more rock 'n' roll) because we're doubling the prizes - that means the first place team gets $100, the second place team gets $50, and the third place team gets $20 - all in gift certificates to spend on a future bar tab at the Mercy.  And you dont' have to be a total music nerd to play, we try to make the questions pretty inclusive, although a healthy obsession with music will always help you win.  There are three rounds of questions, two rounds of name-that-tune, and a final wager where you can - you guessed it - wager up to all of your points in one last-ditch effort to win.  This week's game, on Sunday, June 7, will begin at 9 (doors at 8) and is absolutely FREE.

So anyway, on Monday night, the whole crew got together at WRVU to celebrate all things past and future Rock and Roll Trivia - meaning we read a few of the previous questions, played a few of the old name that tune songs, and then played some tunes that gave you a healthy dose of clues for future questions.  Want a little extra luck this Sunday?  Well, then:

Stream the June 1 edition of Out the Other

And here's the playlist.  Remember, like we said on the show, one block of four songs is a set of four clues for Sunday's game, so pay attention! (You've gotta listen to the stream to hear which four songs.)

1.  Sam Cooke - Twistin the Night Away (Twistin the Night Away)
2.  Paul McCartney and Wings - Jet (Rockshow)
3.  The Features - Walk You Home (The Beginning)
4.  Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs - Wooly Bully (Wooly Bully)
5.  Lou Reed - Satellite of Love (Transformer)
6.  T. Rex - Baby Boomerang (The Slider)
7.  The Kinks - Picture Book (The Village Green Preservation Society)
8.  Postal Service - Against All Odds (Wicker Park OST)
9.  Elliott Smith - Son of Sam (Figure 8)

Playlist - May 25 - Deli Nashville

If you haven't noticed, I've been spending most of my time lately on my Bonnaroo previews page (less than two weeks to go!), which is why things have been quiet around here.  But hopefully you've noticed that the Summer of Guest DJs is officially in full swing on the radio version of Out the Other, and this week I had my second round of guests.

On Monday night, Madison Conger and Ryan Bruce of The Deli Nashville (along with their friend Elle) joined me in the studio, and we spent two hours chatting about tonight's Turbo Fruits 7" release show, spinning some ridiculously great tunes, and trying to fend off issues with the mixer and turntable speed (hilarious technical difficulties are pretty par for the course on OtO).  We had a ton of fun and played a TON of music, and hopefully the boys were convinced they should try to launch a Deli show on WRVU someday soon. Go ahead:

Stream the May 25 edition of Out the Other

One of the highlights of the show was definitely getting the chance to premiere some new Turbo Fruits tunes - we played both sides of the Mama Mad Cos I Fried My Brain 7" that's out today, plus a BRAND new track ("On the Road") that will appear on the band's first full-length for Fat Possum.  If you loved what you heard, you should absolutely head out for the 7" release party tonight at the End - Bad Cop and the Tits are also on the bill, and the Deli-sponsored after party with Third Man DJs will keep things going after the show wraps up.  The cover is only $5, the show starts at 9, and if you stick around for the after party, the Deli will even be raffling off copies of the 7".

And here's Monday's playlist, with a few bonus mp3s (warning: the Beach Boys tune will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day):

1.  Shoot the Mountain - Invitation (Shoot the Mountain EP)
2.  Turbo Fruits - Mama Mad Cos I Fried My Brain (Mama Mad Cos I Fried My Brain 7")
3.  The Holy Modal Rounders - If You Want to Be a Bird (Easy Rider Soundtrack)
4.  T. Rex - Ride a White Swan (Ride a White Swan single)
5.  JEFF the Brotherhood - Bone Jam (Bone Jam)
6.  The Non-Commissioned Officers - Frozen Tongue (Make-Out With Violence Soundtrack)
7.  The Clean - Big Soft Punch (Anthology)
8.  Corndawg - Oversteppin' (I'm Not Ready to Be a Daddy) (mp3)
9.  Meat Puppets - Like a Fire (No Strings Attached)
10.  Ricky Nelson - It's Late (Legendary Masters Series)
11.  Velvet Underground - I Can't Stand It (A Collection of Previously Unreleased Recordings)
12.  Jonathan Richman - New England (Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers) (mp3)
13.  Lansing-Dreiden - A Line You Can Cross (The Dividing Island)
14.  Silver Jews - Honk If You're Lonely (Straight Thru to Nashville)
15.  The Gerbils - Fail to Mention (Battle of Electricity) (mp3)
16.  Tommy James and the Shondells - Crimson & Clover (Anthology)
17.  Screaming Females - I Do (I Do)
18 . Turbo Fruits - Lotta Lotta Ladies (Mama Mad Cos I Fried My Brain 7")
19.  Beach Boys - I Can Hear Music (Sunshine Dream) (mp3)
20.  Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man (Donovan's Greatest Hits)
21.  Big Brother & The Holding Company - Combination of the Two (Cheap Thrills)
22.  Turbo Fruits - On the Road (ureleased)
23.  The Tits - Hands To Yourself (Jesus Says Relax) (mp3)
24.  The Kinks - Starstruck (Village Green Preservation Society)
25.  The Doors - Touch Me (The Doors Greatest Hits)
26.  The Clash - The Train in Vain (London Calling)

The Summer of Guest DJs returns to Out the Other on WRVU!

DJ CAT

Hey guys... guess what?  I got a new timeslot for the summer and it's KILLER - Mondays 7-9 p.m. (aka just like my current time but an hour longer, and exactly the time I wanted).  And having two hours to rock out with means I'm going to bring back what is becoming an official WRVU tradition - the Summer of Guest DJs on Out the Other.

If you're new to OtO, this is how it works. Every week (or at least most weeks), I'll bring a special guest (or guests) on the show to guest DJ the full two hours.  In the past I've hosted guest DJs from bands, record labels, studios, newspapers and music websites - I pretty much invite awesome people with kick-ass taste in music who will spend the two hours spinning stuff you might not necessarily hear on a regular episode of Out the Other.

I'm going to start lining up this summer's guests now that my timeslot has been locked down, but in the meantime, why don't we check out some of the tunes I first heard on a guest-DJed show?

The Langley Schools Music Project - "Desperado"
The Four Seasons - "Wall Street Village Day"
Senor Coconut - "Around the World"
Skream - "Sub Island"

May 4 show preview: How I Became the Bomb

How I Became the Bomb

As I mentioned a little while back, tomorrow's Cinco de Drinko festivities are going to kick a lot of ass this year, thanks to the La Paz 30th Anniversary Cinco Bash going down in Green Hills, which includes a stellar lineup including the likes of Jensen Sportag, Shoot the Mountain, Heypenny, Coral Castles, Mean Tambourines, and a bunch of other acts.  Also anchoring the bill?  OtO faves How I Became the Bomb, who will be my guests on the radio show tonight.

I'm still not sure what the gents have planned for the hour - I suggested a fiesta theme or a rematch after last summer's battle of the song selections - but whatever they bring to the airwaves between the hours of 7 and 8 p.m. tonight, I can promise it will be a delight. They have two digital releases under their belts so far this year, so you can bet at the very least we'll be enjoying some of the new tunes.

Tune in at 7!  And seriously kids, mark your calendars for La Paz tomorrow - because local rock + tequila = a Cinco de Mayo to remember (or you know, drunkenly forget).

"Fancy Meeting You Here" (from They Can What It Seems They Cannot)
"A Formal Occasion" (from Who Dares Wins)

April 20 show preview - The Non-Commissioned Officers!

Albumcover

It should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone who regularly listens to or reads Out the Other that I am SUPER psyched about the official release of the Make-Out With Violence soundtrack, which is finally available.  On top of that is the awesome news that The Non-Commissioned Officers, the band that has been performing tracks from the soundtrack live for the past few years, will be playing a soundtrack release party this Thursday, April 23 at the Mercy Lounge.  And how do we celebrate awesomeness at OtO?  By having guests on the show, of course!

Tonight at 7 p.m., Eric Lehning - who wrote the soundtrack with his brother Jordan, fronts the Non-Commissioned Officers and also stars in the film - will join me in the studio for an hour of Non-Com goodness.  We'll play as much of the soundtrack as we can in the hour, plus chat about its creation and the band's future plans - because word is they're officially out of "retirement" and set to be a real band.

I have NO idea how I'm going to fit all of the songs I want to play into one hour, or even begin to narrow down the two disc, 44-track album, so I might just leave the song selection up to Eric tonight.  Since I scored a copy of the soundtrack at SXSW last month, I've been listening to it rather obsessively, and it will easily rank high on my list of favorite 2009 releases - song after song after song becomes a new favorite.  And if you saw the film at this week's Nashville Film Festival, where it took top honors and the Non-Commissioned Officers won "Best Music in a Feature Film," I'm sure you'll agree that the soundtrack and score seem intrinsically linked to the film once you've seen it. The songs so effectively set a mood that every time I listen I'm immersed in that eerie, summer hazy feeling of the film, whether it's via the more ambient, instrumental bits of the score or the poppier tracks that have been effectively soundtracking my own life of late (I really listen to them that much).

Okay, enough rambling, on to the tunes:

"Ride"
"Addy's Piano Nocturne No. 1"
"Frozen Tongue"

Like I said, the soundtrack is available now and you can order a copy online for only $15. Or, you can come on out and pick one up at the show this Thursday - How I Became the Bomb and And the Relatives are also on the bill, so you know it's going to be a great, great show.

Tune in at 7!

Playlist - April 13 - Record Store Day!

Okay kids, tomorrow's the big day - Record Store Day, that is.  And this week's show (with a few bonus new release tracks) was mostly a celebration of the exclusives and early releases that will be available tomorrow in celebration of the holiday.  Haven't listened yet?

Stream the April 13 edition of Out the Other

I do a lot of chatting about all the musical goodies that are out tomorrow during the show, so definitely check it out.  In the meantime, you can check out a full list of exclusives over on the Record Store Day website while you listen.

And here's the playlist (with a few bonus mp3s):

1.  Wilco - Handshake Drugs (A Ghost Is Born)
2.  Elvis Perkins in Dearland - I'll Be Arriving (Elvis Perkins in Dearland)
3.  Talking Heads - Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town (77) (mp3)
4.  Papercuts - Future Primitive (You Can Have What You Want)
5.  Woods - Military Madness (Songs of Shame)
6.  Metric - Help I'm Alive (Fantasies)
7.  Grizzly Bear - While You Wait For the Others (Live on KCRW 7") (mp3)
8.  Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees (Fake Plastic Trees)
9.  Talking Heads - Psycho Killer (77)
10.  Wilco - A Shot in the Arm (Summerteeth) (mp3)
11.  Talking Heads - Tentative Decisions (77)

And here are two tracks I didn't get a chance to share on the show.  The first is an old Cold War Kids track, a live version of which will appear on Live at Fingerprints, the 5-song EP the band is releasing tomorrow.  The Black Keys track is a Captain Beefheart cover that comes from a compilation called Covered, A Revolution In Sound, and it will appear on a split 7" tomorrow, the flip side of which will be the Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs covering Madonna's "Borderline."

Cold War Kids - "Expensive Tastes"
The Black Keys - "Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles"

And your friendly reminder - GO BUY THIS STUFF TOMORROW AT YOUR LOCAL RECORD STORE.  That's what Record Store Day is all about, after all.  I for one will be trying to score a copy of that sweet sweet Grizzly Bear 7" at Grimey's tomorrow before I head to Knoxville to see Wilco.

April 13 show preview!

Just a quick note before tonight's show (I'm still easing back into computer land after taking most of the weekend off from all things internet), and a friendly reminder to tune in.  I've had guests lined up for the past two weeks, so tonight is a return to Out the Other's original flavor - which means a few new releases, a nice look at the concert calendar, and an hour sans special guests.

But before you start thinking tonight's show is going to be boring - guess what Saturday is?  Record Store Day! (Please say aloud with a "Rex Manning Day" level of excitement.) That means great shows lined up at indie record shops across the country, and a MASSIVE list of Record Store Day exclusives and early releases - including Talking Heads, Wilco, Grizzly Bear, Radiohead, Cold War Kids, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, The Flaming Lips, Metric.... the list goes on and on and ON.  Tonight I'll give you a taste of some of these Record Store Day exclusives, mostly because they're awesome but partially because I want an excuse to play some stuff I don't normally get to play on OtO.

Tune in at 7!
