Playlistarama (June 29 and July 6)

I'm behind on posting playlists (surprise surprise) so I thought I'd hit you with two in one post, along with oodles of mp3s.  The June 29 show was guest DJ-ed by Jon Rogers (it was a Harry Nilsson-ish show to promote the Harry Nilsson tribute at Mercy Lounge) and the July 6 show was hosted by D. On TONIGHT's show, I'll be joined by Adam Gold, who is curating tonight's Nashville Cream 8 off 8th. The decade is the '70s and the tunes will be awesome, so tune in from 7-9 p.m.

Playlist - June 1 - Rock and Roll Trivia

This Sunday will mark the third edition of Rock and Roll Team Trivia at the Mercy Lounge, a brand new event Drew Mischke, Ashley Spurgeon, Dave Paulson and I launched at the Mercy two weeks ago.  See, we play regular trivia weekly at a bar in my neighborhood, and one week Drew said "what if we did music trivia on Sunday nights at Mercy?"  I said it was a great idea, Drew asked me if I would help put it together, and the rest is history.

This week's trivia will be a little different (see: even more rock 'n' roll) because we're doubling the prizes - that means the first place team gets $100, the second place team gets $50, and the third place team gets $20 - all in gift certificates to spend on a future bar tab at the Mercy.  And you dont' have to be a total music nerd to play, we try to make the questions pretty inclusive, although a healthy obsession with music will always help you win.  There are three rounds of questions, two rounds of name-that-tune, and a final wager where you can - you guessed it - wager up to all of your points in one last-ditch effort to win.  This week's game, on Sunday, June 7, will begin at 9 (doors at 8) and is absolutely FREE.

So anyway, on Monday night, the whole crew got together at WRVU to celebrate all things past and future Rock and Roll Trivia - meaning we read a few of the previous questions, played a few of the old name that tune songs, and then played some tunes that gave you a healthy dose of clues for future questions.  Want a little extra luck this Sunday?  Well, then:

Stream the June 1 edition of Out the Other

And here's the playlist.  Remember, like we said on the show, one block of four songs is a set of four clues for Sunday's game, so pay attention! (You've gotta listen to the stream to hear which four songs.)

2.  Paul McCartney and Wings - Jet (Rockshow)

Playlist - May 25 - Deli Nashville

If you haven't noticed, I've been spending most of my time lately on my Bonnaroo previews page (less than two weeks to go!), which is why things have been quiet around here.  But hopefully you've noticed that the Summer of Guest DJs is officially in full swing on the radio version of Out the Other, and this week I had my second round of guests.

On Monday night, Madison Conger and Ryan Bruce of The Deli Nashville (along with their friend Elle) joined me in the studio, and we spent two hours chatting about tonight's Turbo Fruits 7" release show, spinning some ridiculously great tunes, and trying to fend off issues with the mixer and turntable speed (hilarious technical difficulties are pretty par for the course on OtO).  We had a ton of fun and played a TON of music, and hopefully the boys were convinced they should try to launch a Deli show on WRVU someday soon. Go ahead:

Stream the May 25 edition of Out the Other

One of the highlights of the show was definitely getting the chance to premiere some new Turbo Fruits tunes - we played both sides of the Mama Mad Cos I Fried My Brain 7" that's out today, plus a BRAND new track ("On the Road") that will appear on the band's first full-length for Fat Possum.  If you loved what you heard, you should absolutely head out for the 7" release party tonight at the End - Bad Cop and the Tits are also on the bill, and the Deli-sponsored after party with Third Man DJs will keep things going after the show wraps up.  The cover is only $5, the show starts at 9, and if you stick around for the after party, the Deli will even be raffling off copies of the 7".

And here's Monday's playlist, with a few bonus mp3s (warning: the Beach Boys tune will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day):

1.  Shoot the Mountain - Invitation (Shoot the Mountain EP)
2.  Turbo Fruits - Mama Mad Cos I Fried My Brain (Mama Mad Cos I Fried My Brain 7")
3.  The Holy Modal Rounders - If You Want to Be a Bird (Easy Rider Soundtrack)
4.  T. Rex - Ride a White Swan (Ride a White Swan single)
5.  JEFF the Brotherhood - Bone Jam (Bone Jam)
6.  The Non-Commissioned Officers - Frozen Tongue (Make-Out With Violence Soundtrack)
7.  The Clean - Big Soft Punch (Anthology)
8.  Corndawg - Oversteppin' (I'm Not Ready to Be a Daddy) (mp3)
9.  Meat Puppets - Like a Fire (No Strings Attached)
10.  Ricky Nelson - It's Late (Legendary Masters Series)
11.  Velvet Underground - I Can't Stand It (A Collection of Previously Unreleased Recordings)
12.  Jonathan Richman - New England (Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers) (mp3)

Playlist - April 13 - Record Store Day!

Okay kids, tomorrow's the big day - Record Store Day, that is.  And this week's show (with a few bonus new release tracks) was mostly a celebration of the exclusives and early releases that will be available tomorrow in celebration of the holiday.  Haven't listened yet?

Stream the April 13 edition of Out the Other

I do a lot of chatting about all the musical goodies that are out tomorrow during the show, so definitely check it out.  In the meantime, you can check out a full list of exclusives over on the Record Store Day website while you listen.

And here's the playlist (with a few bonus mp3s):

1.  Wilco - Handshake Drugs (A Ghost Is Born)
2.  Elvis Perkins in Dearland - I'll Be Arriving (Elvis Perkins in Dearland)
3.  Talking Heads - Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town (77) (mp3)
4.  Papercuts - Future Primitive (You Can Have What You Want)
5.  Woods - Military Madness (Songs of Shame)
6.  Metric - Help I'm Alive (Fantasies)

9.  Talking Heads - Psycho Killer (77)
10.  Wilco - A Shot in the Arm (Summerteeth) (mp3)
11.  Talking Heads - Tentative Decisions (77)

And here are two tracks I didn't get a chance to share on the show.  The first is an old Cold War Kids track, a live version of which will appear on Live at Fingerprints, the 5-song EP the band is releasing tomorrow.  The Black Keys track is a Captain Beefheart cover that comes from a compilation called Covered, A Revolution In Sound, and it will appear on a split 7" tomorrow, the flip side of which will be the Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs covering Madonna's "Borderline."

Cold War Kids - "Expensive Tastes"
The Black Keys - "Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles"

And your friendly reminder - GO BUY THIS STUFF TOMORROW AT YOUR LOCAL RECORD STORE.  That's what Record Store Day is all about, after all.  I for one will be trying to score a copy of that sweet sweet Grizzly Bear 7" at Grimey's tomorrow before I head to Knoxville to see Wilco.

Playlist - April 6

I'm a little late on posting this one, but hey, life's been busy.  But guess what?  You can:

Stream the April 6 edition of Out the Other

AND

Stream the bonus second hour of this week's Out the Other

Two for the price of one!  You just can't beat that.

I was of course joined in the studio by Bryan and Jeremy of Pico vs Island Trees in the first hour, and we took a nice spin through their brand new EP, FuturaFutura is available digitally right now, but you'll be able to pick up a physical copy of the album at their EP release party this Saturday at Mercy Lounge.  It's going down at 9 p.m., with And the Relatives and Elle Macho opening, which pretty much means it's going to rock.  And it's only $5.

The physical CD version of the EP should also be up on CDBaby shortly, so keep an eye on the Myspace for that.  And by all means, get your daily dose of Pico via Twitter, Tumblr, or pretty much every other social media available. :)

But right now, check out the show!  Like I said, we played the whole EP, plus chatted a bunch, and then in the second hour I played a bunch of new stuff I've been digging on lately.  The first Non-Commissioned Officers track I played is the first song in the second hour, FYI.

Playlist - March 30 (The Privates)

A quick rundown of last night's show, which you can now listen here:

Stream the March 30 edition of Out the Other

As always, having Dave and Ryan from The Privates on the show was a blast - gum chewing noises aside (which probably didn't even get picked up over the air, but I promise you, I could hear them in my headphones).  We got to listen to the new EP, Motion, in its entirety - and chat about each of the songs on the album, their opening slot last fall for the Walkmen, and plans for this Friday's release show party at the Basement.  Better see you there!

1.  The Privates - You Never Take Me Dancing (from Motion)
2.  The Privates - I'll Be Honest (from Motion)
3.  The Privates - Motion (from Motion)
4.  The Privates - The Breeze (from Motion)
5.  The Privates - Put the Hurt on 'Em (from Motion)
6.  Malaria - Kaltes Klares Wasser (from Compiled 1981-1984)
7.  Hotpipes - Brain and a Vegetable (from Future Bolt)
8.  Tristen - The Detective (DPAUL remix) (unreleased)
9.  The Privates - My Shoes (from Barricades)

Remember, Motion comes out this Friday, and you'll be able to pick up a copy at the release party.  But it actually looks like you can already buy a digital version over on the band's Bandcamp page, so go nab it now!

Playlist - February 9

Look at me, totally rocking the playlist the ACTUAL NIGHT OF THE SHOW.  I'm not sure this has ever happened.  I'll link it up later.

Stream the February 9 edition of Out the Other

Playlist - January 19

Okay, it's totally about time I got back on board the playlist-posting train.  Work's been busy, blah blah blah - hopefully you're still tuning in to the show, though - and if not, hopefully you've been checking out the archive.

Last week's show was the first real celebration of new releases, and I kicked it off by featuring what is thus far one of my favorite albums of 2009 - Andrew Bird's Noble Beast. I plan on posting about the album sooner or later this week, with additional mp3s, but in the meantime you can hear three tracks off the record if you go ahead and:

Stream the January 19 edition of Out the Other

This link will be good until tonight's show ends - then I'll have to figure out what the permanent link is and update it.  And I promise I will.

Also "hitting the racks" last week (isn't that a funny phrase?  These days, it's more like "hitting your favorite online music retailer," although I hope you're still shopping at places like Grimey's) we had new A.C. Newman, Bon Iver, J. Tillman and Animal Collective.  The rest of the playlist drew from bands that played in Nashville last week, but 3/4 of those were local, so fear not cause they'll most likely be hitting your favorite venue again soon.

1.  Andrew Bird - Masterswarm (Noble Beast)
2.  A.C. Newman - The Heartbreak Rides (Get Guilty)
3.  Hotpipes - Rattle Cats (Hotpipes)
4.  Prabir and the Substitutes - Trains (Five Little Pieces)

Playlist - November 3 - How I Became the Bomb

Okay, it's been ages and ages since I actually posted a show playlist, but I'm hoping to remedy that in the next week, now that I have all the archive links all sorted out. But this is how it's going to work - for the week after each show, that icon at the top of the right column will be your link to listen to the most current show.  After that, I'll add an archive link to this playlist post so you can listen to the show in the future.

Go listen!

So Monday's show I had Jon and Rick from How I Became the Bomb join me on the show, and we celebrated the release of Volume 1: Who Dares Wins - which is available NOW as a free download on the band's website.  If you've heard the show, you already know how awesome the release is, so you should head over and download it. And if you haven't heard the show yet, check it out - because we got a chance to chat about the new songs, a cancer-causing cosmonaut helmet, and their plans for a future showdown/rematch on Out the Other later this year.

Here's the playlist:

1. Margot & the Nuclear So & So's - Bookworm (The Daytrotter Sessions EP)
2. Calexico - Inspiracion (Carried to Dust)
3. How I Became the Bomb - Salvage Mission (Volume 1: Who Dares Wins)
4. Francis Monkman - Long Good Friday Theme (Long Good Friday Soundtrack)
5. Kate Bush - Hounds of Love (Hounds of Love)
6. Freddy Mercury - Love Kills (Metropolis Soundtrack)
7. How I Became the Bomb - A Formal Occasion (Volume 1: Who Dares Wins)
8. Abba - That's Me (Arrival)
9. Talk Talk - Talk Talk (Natural History)
10. Goblin - Tenebre Theme (Tenebre Soundtrack)
11. How I Became the Bomb - Tomorrow's Date (Volume 1: Who Dares Wins)

(PS - that Tenebre song was totally turned into Justice's "Phantom" - I got a chance to look it up when I got home)
