DM Stith - Heavy Ghost

Like I just said, I've been spending a lot of time on twitter lately - not only does it take about three seconds to share something like a tour announcement, a new video or an update about one of my favorite bands, it has also given me the opportunity to do something I've always been hesitant to do here on the blog - be really, really honest.  Not that I'm not honest on Out the Other, but I've always been a fan of the motto "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all," particularly cause saying non-nice stuff takes TIME, and that's something I always seem to be lacking. But when saying something non-nice takes only three seconds? BAM - I just told you I'm a little disappointed in the new Jamie T album.  In fact, I'm less overwhelmed by all my new music these days because I can regularly do "new music days" on twitter, where I briefly give you my thoughts on five new albums I'm listening to that day.

But, I need to remember that my twitter audience and my blog audience (not to mention my radio show audience) are not all one and the same.  And once in a while there's something that definitely needs a bit more attention, not to mention the most awesomely awesome thing about a music blog - the opportunity for you to hear what I'm talking about.

Yesterday I got a copy of DM Stith's album Heavy Ghost.  His name came up the night before in conversation, and while I had some name recognition when it came to Stith, that was about it.  Heavy Ghost came out on Asthmatic Kitty earlier this year in March, and it somehow slipped under my radar until yesterday, which makes me immensely sad because I could have spent the last six months of the year enjoying this album.

I feel like I've settled into my new (old) timeslot for the fall, and I have to say I love still having two hours even though the summer of guest DJs has come to a close.  Not getting all panicky about time constraints gives me a surprising amount of freedom - I can play a long-ass song and not be concerned that I'm missing the opportunity to play two songs in its place, I can feature two or more tracks from more than one album every week, I can continue to play new records after their release date without having to worry about new-new-new, and I can play brand new tracks from future releases, because I have a whole extra hour to play with. I'm telling you, having two hours is AMAZING.  It'll be even greater later this semester when I have guests in, and I'll still have an extra hour to continue playing new releases and bands playing in town, so I won't have to skip the regular programming for a whole week. Hooray!

Anywho, the two hours this week gave me the opportunity to feature Le Loup's new album Family, which is one of my favorite releases this fall, and I played four lengthy tracks off the album because I had plenty of time.  We also heard three songs from the new Islands record Vapours, which also came out this week, along with a healthy handful of tunes from other albums that came out on Tuesday.  Then there was a dip into the concert calendar, a peek at the new Thom Yorke (with the most brilliant transition I have ever executed into the Le Loup track "Sherpa") and a whole lotta whining about the weirdness of the webcam.  I might wear a costume next week.  Go ahead:

Sooooo one week from tomorrow, I turn 28.  In honor of this less than momentous birthday and my increasing oldness, I thought this year called for a little bit of a birthday shindig.  And crazy music girl that I am, I thought the appropriate birthday party for a DJ and music blogger would, of course, be a show. And you're all invited.

Next Friday, September 18th (my birthday eve - my actual b-day is the 19th), I'll be partying it up with three kick-asstic local bands over in East Nashville at The 5 Spot (an awesome venue with an awesome bar - no beer-only birthday party for this girl).  Kicking off the night will be OtO faves Eureka Gold and And the Relatives, and headlining the evening (and making their official debut) will be BRAND new '90s cover band My So-Called Band, which features Dave Paulson, Keith Lowen and Sam Smith (and possibly other guests - I honestly have no idea what they have up their sleeves). 

As an added bonus, my hobbit-like birthday gift to you is the fact that the show is absolutely, 100% FREE.  Yup, two of the best local bands in Nashville, plus quite possibly the greatest '90s cover band you will hear in your life?  Apparently, I can throw a decent birthday party. Things will kick off around 9, and the show is 21+.

So mark your calendars and come celebrate with me. Lotsa booze and smiling faces will make me feel less old.

Miike Snow - "Animal"

I know next to nothing about Miike Snow, but Wikipedia tells me that they're a Swedish band (NOT a dude whose parents couldn't spell "Mike") and the Guardian called them "coolly emotional pop suggests a-ha meets Animal Collective."

There are a bunch of tasty remixes of this track floating around (I think I dig the Fake Blood one the most), but immerse yourself in the original first. 

The self-titled album Miike Snow came out back in June on Downtown Records. I think I'll go check it out right now...
