This post is from Out the Other's 2009 Bonnaroo Artist Previews, where I will be posting previews of all the musical acts playing the 2009 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Please check out and subscribe to the full site to learn more about all of this year's performers.
Editor's note: This is a guest preview from contributor Sarah Thornton, a Nashville-based budding music journalist who publishes her own music blog, We Don't Get Out Very Much. Sarah can be reached via her website, or via email at sarah.thornton7@gmail.com.
It really takes a lot for me to like female vocalists, and it usually takes time for me to warm up to them. This, however, was not the case with St. Vincent, the alias of Annie Clark, the beautiful 26 year old Brooklyn-based singer. The first time I heard "Now, Now" off of her debut album, Marry Me, I was completely hooked on Annie's voice. Not only does is it unique and addictive, but it leaves you with a wonderfully eerie feeling that lasts until you hear her voice again. Not to mention the fact that Annie is a very talented guitarist and has been playing since she was only 12 years old; she has also been a member of the massive Polyphonic Spree and a part of Sufjan Stevens' touring band.
Annie's sophomore album, Actor, was released on May 5th, and the singer admits to writing the entire album using the Garageband application for Apple. But it definitely does not disappoint: the tone is immediately set with the amazing first track, "The Strangers", and the first single, "Actor Out of Work" is exceptional as well. All in all, she's a female vocalist that absolutely has the power to win you over. But, really, how could you not like a girl who named her first album after an Arrested Development reference?
St. Vincent will play the That Tent on Friday from 3-4:15 p.m. Check out the full Bonnaroo schedule on the official Bonnaroo website.
