This post is from Out the Other's 2009 Bonnaroo Artist Previews, where I will be posting previews of all the musical acts playing the 2009 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Please check out and subscribe to the full site to learn more about all of this year's performers.
Editor's Note: This is a guest preview from Jenny Stracener, a Murfreesboro-based writer and photographer who writes the blog Conglomeration Fabrication. Jenny can be reached via her website or at jannephotography@gmail.com.
You can say you don't like country music all you want, but Those Darlins might just change your mind. Nikki, Kelley and Jessi Darlin - three girls who came together in Murfreesboro, bonding over their shared love of old country - put their own spin on the genre, both with covers of artists like the Carter Family and their own sharp and witty original songs.
These girls like to have a good time and it's obvious - from the vintage inspired outfits you wish you had thought of putting together, to the excited and upbeat demeanor on stage and off. And the fact they will tell you how it is only makes them more so a bunch you would want to hang out with.
Their sound began in a folkier, more quiet way a few years back, but since they have added Linwood Kirk on drums, producing more of a rock vibe and allowing the ladies to visibly get more into songs like "Red Light Love" and "The Whole Damn Thing."
Back in November, Those Darlins released a limited pressing of an EP as a teaser for their forthcoming full-length record, which was recorded in New York City and will drop in June. They've recently opened for artists such as the legendary rockabilly lady, Wanda Jackson and the Avett Brothers, and after they show Manchester what they're really made of, they'll celebrate their CD release with the Black Lips at the Mercy Lounge on June 27.
Those Darlins will play the Troo Music Stage on Thursday from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Check out the full Bonnaroo schedule on the official Bonnaroo website.
