Bands like BrakesBrakesBrakes make me both glad and sad Out the Other's archives exist. Glad, because I know I used to listen to them, but I can't really remember what I thought, so being able to go back and actually read said thoughts is kinda handy. Sad, because when you're talking about something I wrote back in 2005, the level of writing skill is really not something I want to go back and revisit. Ah well, I really did love that song.
Anyway, to quote my 2005 self, BrakesBrakesBrakes are a Brighton supergroup of sorts - with members taken from British Sea Power, The Tenderfoot and Electric Soft Parade. Formed in 2003, they actually perform under the name "Brakes" over in the UK, but due to that whole naming rights/bands already existing/UK vs. US craziness, they had to swap their name to BrakesBrakesBrakes here in the States. They actually grabbed my attention four years ago with their tune "All Night Disco Party" (catchy doesn't even cover it) and then by spending the summer of 2006 in Nashville to record their second album The Beatific Visions. They played a handful of times in town that summer, including at Grimey's, and I remember them being as fun as can be.
Last month, the band released their third album, Touchdown, on Fat Cat Records. I haven't heard the whole thing yet, but what I have heard is making me wonder why I ever stopped paying attention to the band. Propelled by tons-o-guitars and lead singer Eamon Hamilton's oddly pleasantly yelpy voice, every new song I've heard makes me wish they were spending the summer of 2009 back in Nashville.
