Get down with WRVU at Left Can Dance tonight!!

LCD

What better way to kick off this nice loooong weekend than with a dance party with your favorite DJs at WRVU?  Tonight at The End, the station will be celebrating "the best of the left of the dial" at a very special WRVU-hosted Left Can Dance, everyone's favorite non-pretentious kick-ass Nashville recurring dance party.  DJs from Antennas to Heaven, New Wave Smackdown and Between Pop & Pretense will all be on hand to keep you on your feet - and considering the fact that those are three of my favorite shows on WRVU, you can bet you're going to hear a lot of great music tonight.

I DJed one of these last summer (or spring? I can't remember) and it was a blast - unfortunately I couldn't accept their invite to bring my (total lack of) wiki-wiki DJ skills to the End this time around, but I promise you it'll be fun.  It all kicks off at 9 p.m., it's 18+, and since it is a benefit for the radio station, there's a $5 donation.

So go, dance, support your favorite Nashville radio station and meet some of your favorite WRVU DJs!

I have no idea what they're planning on playing but these make me want to dance:

Friendly Fires - "On Board"
The Ting Tings - "Great DJ (Calvin Harris Remix)"

Trippin' with Howlies tomorrow @ Mercy Lounge!

HOWLIES3

Once upon a time last fall, my friend Joe brought four Atlanta boys to my birthday party - they happened to be a band called Howlies, and they had played earlier that day at a Grimey's outdoor party/sale.  Little did I know as they scarfed my sister's chili and repeatedly hit the keg that night that they'd become good friends, occasional guests at the Timmons B&B for wayward musicians - and one of the best new bands I would come across all year.

Here we are almost a year later, and Howlies are getting ready to release their first album - Trippin' With Howlies - with world domination soon to follow.  They just released their first single/EP - Sea Level - on OverUnder Records and they're currently in the midst of a long and looping tour that sees them hitting Nashville three times in the space of two months.  They were just at Springwater a few weeks ago, in a few weeks they'll be here for Next Big Nashille, but sooner and more importantly at the moment - they're playing tomorrow night at Mercy Lounge.  In fact, it's my concert pick of the weekend - How I Became the Bomb and Eureka Gold are on the bill as well and all signs point to AWESOMENESS.  No really, that's the best triple-threat we've seen since... well, a while.

"Sea Level"

See you tomorrow night!

Mark your calendar: King Khan & BBQ Show @ Exit/In 11/20

King Khan

I think this is going to be awesome - I just hope we don't see his ass (that's totally NSFW, by the way).

The whole King Khan thing is hella confusing to me - there's King Khan & The Shrines and King Khan & BBQ Show, and until about two minutes ago I didn't know the difference.  But according to wikipedia, the story goes a little bit like this (I don't know if any of this is true, or if the timeline is accurate, but it sounds good to me):

  • First there was a Montreal-based garage band called The Spaceshits, which included a dude named Blacksnake and a dude named BBQ.  The Spaceshits went on tour to Europe and Blacksnake decided to stay in Germany, so the band broke up.
  • While in Berlin, Blacksnake changed his pseudonym to King Khan, and formed a new psychedelic soul and garage rock band called King Khan & The Shrines (also sometimes called King Khan & His Sensational Shrines).  They have released four albums since 2001, and in June of this year Vice released The Supreme Genius of King Khan & The Shrines, which is kinda like a greatest-hits deal.  And it's KICK ASS.
  • In the meantime BBQ veentured off to do his own one-man band thing, and eventually got back in touch with his buddy Blacksnake/King Khan.  BBQ played a few shows alongside The Shrines, and eventually the two started to write songs together and play sporadic shows around Germany and Spain.  Now they've recorded two albums together - The King Khan & BBQ Show LP, and What's For Dinner?

So The King Khan & BBQ Show are going to be at Mercy Lounge on Thursday November 20.  Tickets are available now - they're $10 and the show is 18+.  Now that you've heard the King Khan story, mark your calendar and get your listen on:

"Fish Fight" (from The King Khan & BBQ Show)
"What's For Dinner?" (from What's For Dinner?)

Out now: Delta Spirit - Ode To Sunshine

Delta Spirit - Ode to Sunshine

I was a little surprised to see Delta Spirit's Ode To Sunshine pop up on this week's list of new releases - after all, I've been listening to the album pretty regularly for what feels like ages now, though I keep forgetting that it was never widely distributed after being self-released by the band last year.  But as of yesterday, you can pick it up very easily thanks to Rounder Records, which is great news because this is a great album and a great, great band.

Delta Spirit have two Nashville shows coming up in the future - they'll be here with Dr. Dog on Sunday, September 7 at 3rd and Lindsley, and then again on Tuesday, October 21 with Cold War Kids.  I suggest you pick up your tickets to both pretty much immediately, because as we all know:  amazing openers + fantastic headliners = good times had by all.

Playlist - August 25 - All We Seabees

Monday night's show was the final episode of the Summer of Guest DJs on Out the Other; it was my last show on the summer schedule, and my last two-hour show for at least the next nine months or so.  So it was appropriate to bring on one of my favorite Nashville bands - All We Seabees - to listen to lotsa tracks off of their new album MKultra, chat about some randomness including Smokey the Bear, and just generally have a great time hanging out on the air for two hours.  Thanks again to Zach, Justin and Aaron for coming by - and I'm sorry the other half of the Seabees couldn't make it this time around.  There's always the Summer of Guest DJs: 2009!

Yay!  The archives are back!

Stream the August 25 edition of Out the Other

Like I said, we played lotsa tracks off of MKultra, plus a bunch of extra goodness as well - some Americana, some jazz, some local hotness.   While you're streaming the whole thing, here's the playlist so you can follow along:

1.  Hotpipes - Where Is the Shore? (Future Bolt)
2.  All We Seabees - Tigers (MKultra)
3.  All We Seabees - Alt. Country (MKultra)
4.  Altered Statesmen - Jomo K (Altered Statesmen)
5.  Hands Down Eugene - Denise (Madison)
6.  Pinback - Bouquet (Autumn of the Seraphs)
7.  Atlas Songs - Oh Atlas (Wide Array)
8.  All We Seabees - Hartsy Fartsy (MKultra)
9.  Angus Whyte and the Irish Rednecks - Fell Out (Angus Whyte and the Irish Rednecks)
10.  Mary Gauthier - Mercy Now (Mercy Now)
11.  All We Seabees - Howard (MKultra)
12.  All We Seabees - Flirty Fishers (MKultra)
13.  New South Bear - In My Veins (4/5/08)
14.  The Avett Brothers - Gimmeakiss (Four Thieves Gone)
15.  Snowglobe - Rainbow (Oxytocin)
16.  All We Seabees - Needle (MKultra)
17.  All We Seabees - Underwater Animal Colors (MKultra)
18.  Ella Fitzgerald - Angel Eyes (First Lady of Song)
19.  Joanna Newsom - Cosmia (EP)
20.  All We Seabees - How We Came To Be (MKultra)

I'll be sharing my $.02 on MKultra shortly (with a reminder to attend their September 2 in-store @ Grimeys and their September 6 CD release @ The Basement), so keep it tuned for that.

AND, keep an eye out - I should be hearing shortly where Out the Other will be landing on the WRVU schedule for the fall of 2008.  Keep your fingers crossed!

We Own This Town #14

blog_wott14

At the prompting of Mr. Eades over at Yewknee, I compiled a mix of some of my recent favorite local tracks for We Own This Town #14.   If you haven't jumped on this podcast already, now is absolutely the time to do so - I'm pretty proud of the little list I assembled, and hope you guys dig the songs just as much as I do.  Here's the tracklist:

  1. Pico vs Island Trees - “Open Doors”
  2. The Features  - “GMF”
  3. Kyle Andrews - “Call and Fade”
  4. Tallest Trees - “Finally Home”
  5. Eureka Gold - “Peter Oh”
  6. The Mattoid - “Hey Dude”
  7. The Turf - “Oh! Oh! Oh!”
  8. All We Seabees - “Alt Country”

You can download or stream it right now.  And while you're there, absolutely subscribe to the site - Michael's doing a great job keeping up with the concert calendar, and the podcasts are coming in pretty regularly.  There's lots of great Nashville music to share.

Pre-order The Features Some Kind of Salvation now!

TheFeatures

Happy Features news for your rainy Monday morning - the band's new album (and perhaps my favorite album of 2008), Some Kind of Salvation, is now available for pre-order via the band's website.  And we're not talking CDs kids - we're talking limited edition 180-gram double vinyl, complete with two bonus tracks - "Now You Know" and "Mosis Tosis."   Each purchase will come with screen printed artwork and an mp3 download card of the album so you can have the best of both worlds.  Go pre-order your copy now - the vinyl is set to ship September 30th or earlier.

And since Some Kind of Salvation is FINALLY coming out, that means an album release show! It's a little ways away, but on Friday, October 24th The Features will be celebrating the new record release over at Mercy Lounge.  Hopefully it'll be a little cooler than the last show they played at Mercy, but it's not-to-be-missed no matter what.

Here's another tune off the new album:

"Baby's Hammer"

August 25 show preview - All We Seabees

All We Seabees

Last August I invited All We Seabees to guest-DJ an episode of Out the Other after catching only one of their gigs (opening for Hotpipes) and being pretty much blown away.  It seems crazy that that was just over a year ago, because that show basically served as my introduction to the band - and here we are at the end of this August, and All We Seabees is absolutely one of my favorite Nashville bands.

On tonight's show, we're going to be celebrating the upcoming release of the new All We Seabees album - MKultra - which will be out next week on September 2.   And that means there are a few things you should be marking on your calendar next week - namely the in-store performance at Grimey's next Tuesday at 6 p.m., and then the official CD release party at The Basement on Saturday the 6th with Hotpipes and Hands Off Cuba.   Tonight we should be getting a good taste of MKultra, plus we'll catch up with what the guys have been up to and what they've been listening to lately.

Here's a little sample of the goodness you can expect from MKultra:

"Alt. Country"

Tune in at 10!

No One Does It Like You

Department of Eagles

I thought for half a second about sticking this in a "Two New" post, but then I came to my senses and realized that the re-worked version of my #3 favorite song of last year deserves its own post.

On October 7, Department of Eagles will release their new album, In Ear Park, and I'm pretty much counting down the days.  We've already had a taste of the title track, and now the band has released an mp3 of "No One Does It Like You" with a few subtle changes from the demo version that made the rounds last year.  I am still deeply, deeply in love with this song, so any little excuse to post it is absolutely fine by me.

"No One Does It Like You"

And here's the title track as well:

"In Ear Park"

It sounds to me like this is going to be the perfect fall album - the air almost feels chillier when you listen.  I can't can't wait to hear the whole thing.

Playlist - August 18 - Justin Kase

Monday night's show was ridiculously great, and a first for me - since my guest DJ, Justin Kase, is a real DJ, he created an exclusive WRVU mix for Out the Other that we played uninterrupted in the second hour of the show.  Plus, I'm posting that mix here today so you can check it out if you missed it, but we'll get to that in a minute.

I was thrilled to have Justin on the show this week, because he's one of the big names in Nashville's electro/indie/dance/blog house/nu disco/etc/etc/etc scene - a scene that doesn't necessarily have a name, because unfortunately it hasn't become a scene that a ton of people around town are talking about yet.  But that won't last long if Justin has anything to say about it - his weekly night at Bar Twenty3, VBS, is making a great name for itself every Thursday, and starting to bring some great talent into town as well (see: French Horn Rebellion).  This fall, we have Does It Offend You Yeah, MSTRKRFT and Girl Talk all making stops in Nashville, and the fact that all signs point to that Girl Talk show selling out Cannery come November means that this scene totally exists in Nashville, though the participants might not be aware of the fact that it's an actual scene.  Basically what I mean is that if you love Girl Talk, MSTRKRFT or Does It Offend You Yeah, there's a bunch of stuff going on in town that you'd probably love as well, and you can bet you're going to hear about all of it on Justin's blog - Blogging Is Serious Business.  If you like what you heard on the show Monday night, that's going to be a blog you'll want to check on a regular basis.

And if you didn't hear the show on Monday night?  Well fear not, because even though we don't have an archive again this week (everything should be fixed up for next Monday though), we do have a TON of mp3s for you to check out.  Plus, that 48 minute mix I mentioned a minute ago.

Here's the playlist from this week's show (the second hour was the Out the Other mix):

1.  CSS - Rat Is Dead (Rage) (Donkey)
2.  Brazilian Girls - Noveau Americain (New York City)
3.  The Twelves - Works For Me (demo) (mp3)
4.  Jensen Sportag - Jackie (Justin Kase Remix) (demo)
5.  The Faint - The Geeks Were Right (Fasciinatiion)
6.  Does It Offend You, Yeah? - Dawn of the Dead (You Have No Idea What You Are Getting Yourself Into)
7.  Demon vs Heartbreaker - You Are My High (You Are My High) (mp3)
8.  Ladyhawke - Paris S'Enflamme (Paris S'Enflamme) (mp3)
9.  French Horn Rebellion - Up All Night (French Horn Rebellion) (mp3)
10.  Little Pictures - I Wish I Could Keep You (demo) (mp3)
11.  Holy Ghost! - Hold On (unreleased)

Justin Kase's Out the Other Mix (download mp3):

tracklist:
1.  CSS - Move
2.  Sebastien Tellier - Broadway (Chicken Lips Remix)
3.  MGMT - Electric Feel (Justice Remix)
4.  Private - We've Got Some Breaking Up To Do (Victory Force Breakdown)
5.  Sebastien Tellier - Divine (Danger Remix)
6.  Ashton Shuffle - Stomp Yo Feet (Shazam Remix)
7.  Treasure Fingers - Cross The Dancefloor (Laidback Luke Remix)
8.  We In Music - Grandlife
9.  Xinobi - Day Off
10.  Romulus and Remus - Rar
11.  Walter Meego - Looking Through A Keyhole (Le Castlevania Remix)
12.  M83 - Kim and Jessie (Data Remix)

And a bonus two tracks we didn't even get to play:

Crystal Castles - Crimewave (Lazrtag Remix) (mp3)
Sally Shapiro - Time To Let Go (CFCF Remix) (mp3)
