Delta Spirit @ The End TONIGHT!

Delta Spirit

Once in a while a completely unfamiliar opening band can be an incredibly welcome surprise - case in point, Delta Spirit.  In March of last year, I went to Mercy Lounge one night to see Cold War Kids and Tokyo Police Club play, and went home wondering why I had never heard of the San Diego band that had kicked off the show.  They sounded amazing that night - and seemed to be having an amazing time on stage - so I made a mental note to check out their album if I ever came across it.

And come across it I did.  Ode To Sunshine has been an absolute staple on my iPod since I first heard the album, and I was recently thrilled to hear that it will see a re-release on Rounder Records on August 26.  That, paired with a tour with Dr. Dog in the fall, means that more people will be introduced to Delta Spirit in the months to come, and I'm pretty sure that as people get to know the band, they will be making their fair share of "best of" lists by the end of this year.

And you get a chance to check out the band tonight - they'll be in Nashville to play a show at The End, a pretty intimate venue for a band I last caught at the cavernous Buffalo Billiards in Austin at SXSW.  I'm super excited I'm going to get another chance to see them live, and you should be too.  The album may be excellent (and it completely and totally is), but in my opinion the songs are really meant to be heard live.

"Trashcan"
"Children"

Also on the bill tonight - a Murfreesboro band called Childhood TV Stars and a Clarksville band called Toby the Fugitive.  The show kicks off at 9 p.m. - the cover is $7 and it's 18+.

The Features - Some Kind of Salvation

TheFeatures

UPDATE:  Okay kids, sorry this post went MIA for a little bit.  I spoke to Rollum from The Features and apparently someone SERIOUSLY jumped the gun when this was released digitally, and it's going to be taken down ASAP (if it hasn't already).  The band is really thrilled that everyone loves the album, but the original idea was to release Some Kind of Salvation on vinyl first, and they in no way planned on having the digital version available before they had something big and gorgeous and LP-alicious to get into your hot little hands.  That's still the plan at this point - the LP should be out in August, and the CD and digital version should see a release in October.

I know, I know, October is forever away.  But Some Kind of Salvation will be spinning on your turntables soon enough, and in the meantime I've gotta respect the fact that the band wants the album to make its debut as a physical release.

I'll let you know as soon as I get any additional details, and I'm going to go back to not being a big tease and refraining from talking about the album (other than on the radio - it's still fair game to play tunes on the show).   You still get to check out my favorite track on the record though:

"Lions"

We Own This Town #11

Michael Eades - the gent behind Yewknee and other delightful things like Whiskerino, Moustache May, and the Summer Mix Series (which launches next week - so Michael will be guest-DJing with me to celebrate soon) - just posted a brand new We Own This Town over on the website of the same name.  It's 7 tracks from some local greats and new Nashville faces, so go ahead and check it out.

We Own This Town is also a great place to keep up with local band news and show dates, so do yourself a favor and keep an eye on the site.  And if you're in a band - make sure you CC Michael whenever you have fun stuff to announce - he's trying hard to make WOTT a great local resource, but he can't without your help.

June 23 show preview

My Morning Jacket tickets aren't the only exciting thing going down on the show tonight - the Summer of Guest DJs is also moving right along, and I have another excellent guest lined up to share some tunes with you.

This evening, I'll be joined in the studio by Andy Vastagh of Boss Construction.  Andy and I have been chatting about him coming on the show for ages now (seriously - for more than a year), so I'm excited he'll be spending two hours tonight hanging out and playing some music.  Not only is Boss Construction responsible for some of the coolest artwork I own, but Andy is also a huge music fan and he and I have been bumping into each other at shows since we were first introduced.  Tonight we'll be talking about some of the projects he's been working on lately (we'll be hearing from some of the artists he's designing for, and hear about the Scene cover he has coming out this week), some of the shows he's been to lately and is looking forward to, as well as just hearing what he's been listening to lately.

Unfortunately radio isn't a visual medium, so while you listen to the show tonight (or before you tune in), you should spend some quality time checking out Andy's work on the Boss Construction website

Tune in at 10!

Win tickets to My Morning Jacket - August 15 at Riverfront Park!

My Morning Jacket

Here's some excitingness for your Monday - on tonight's show, I'm going to be giving away a pair of tickets to see My Morning Jacket here in Nashville on Friday, August 15 at Riverfront Park.  Tickets for the show are on sale now, but they'll set you back $29 so I'd like to set you up with a pair that's f-r-e-e.

If you haven't been paying attention, My Morning Jacket just released a new album - Evil Urges - and I've definitely been spending some time lately checking it out.  Here's my current favorite tune on the record (and certainly the lengthiest one):

"Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Pt. 2"

This Riverfront Park show is going to be an excellent chance to check out MMJ - there are very few outdoor venues in town these days so opportunities to see kick back on some grass and check out a great band are few and far between.  And something tells me that My Morning Jacket's music is super well-suited to chilling along a river under the stars.

So what do you have to do to win?  Just tune into Out the Other tonight from 10 p.m.- midnight on WRVU (that would be 91.1 in Nashville, or online right here).

Monday morning mini-mix (part 22)

A few leftovers from last week's show:

Jens Lekman - "You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon cover)"
Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett - "Listen to Hear Heart (Tom Petty cover)"
Elbow - "Back to Black (Amy Winehouse cover)"
Shout Out Louds - "Man on the Moon (R.E.M. cover)"
Bill Murray - "Star Wars"

Playlist - June 16 - Cover show!

I know I've been sitting on the playlist for this one for a full week now - but after I wrapped up my vacation last week, I realized I needed to extend the blog vacation a little bit longer.  It was a lovely and much-needed week off, and now that I've had a chance to regroup, it's time to catch up.

First up, if you haven't had a chance to yet, check out the archive of last week's show.  And no worries, this link will work for ages, so you don't have to worry about listening to this before tonight's show archives:

Stream the June 16 edition of Out the Other

The show was a near-disaster, but my guest DJ and big sister Becky and I managed to recover nicely, discovering that most of the covers we wanted to play were safely stored on my ipod.  Which meant crappy transitions between songs and the occasional volume issues, but you guys seemed to dig the show anyway, if all of your nice nice phone calls are any indication.  Here's the playlist, and I'm going to hit you with a Monday morning mini-mix in just a minute that has a few leftover mp3s.  I might share a few of the tunes I actually played on the show as mp3s in a later post - just not this morning.

Monday's show was a nice dose of newness to catch you up (or to show you what's coming up, I should say).  Not only did I sample tracks off of a bunch of upcoming releases (Sigur Ros, Electric President, Bound Stems, Dr. Dog, etc), I also played two tracks off both the excellent upcoming Features and Kyle Andrews albums.  If you haven't heard the show yet, go ahead and:

Frightened Rabbit @ Grimey's this evening, and @ Exit/In with French Kicks tonight!!

frightened rabbit-1

Hopefully you've had this one on your calendar for two months now, but in case you haven't - here's your friendly reminder that Frightened Rabbit and French Kicks are in town tonight to play over at Exit/In.  I have been SUPER excited about this show since it was announced - not only are French Kicks one of my favorite bands, but I've been head over heels for Scotland's Frightened Rabbit for the past six months or so as well.

I got a chance to see Frightened Rabbit back in March at SXSW, and one of my few regrets from that Austin trip is the fact that I only got to see them once.  But today, here in Nashville, we have the opportunity to see them twice!  The band is also playing a free in-store at Grimey's at 6 p.m., and I highly, highly recommend you check it out.  While you're there, you should also pick up a copy of The Midnight Organ Fight, which is pretty darn high in the ranks of albums vying for the title of Janet's Favorite of 2008.

I actually played two tracks off the new album on last night's show (you can stream it right here), but in case you need extra persuading - here's another new one and one from Sing the Greys as well.

"The Modern Leper" (from The Midnight Organ Fight)
"Music Now" (from Sing the Greys)

I've been going on and on about French Kicks literally for years now on this blog, and I hope everyone who is reading this already got a chance to see them one of the last times they were in town (at the Basement or Exit/In).  Tonight is the first time they'll be visiting Nashville since the recent release of Swimming though, and I'm most definitely looking forward to hearing the new songs live.  I played two on last night's show (remember - here) but here's another pair:

"Said So What" (from Swimming)
"One More Time" (from The Trial of the Century)

Tonight's show kicks off at 9 p.m. with The Weather Underground - tickets are only $10 and the show is 18+.  See you there!
