Ben Sollee - free showcase @ The Basement today
Back in April, at the Grimey's annual spring sale and party, I caught the tail-end of a performance by Ben Sollee. I only got to see him play for a few minutes, but to be honest, a few minutes was all it took to be charmed by a bespectacled boy singing and playing a cello.
Since then, I've gotten a chance to spend some time with Sollee's album, Learning To Bend, and the CD has left just as favorable an impression. "Indie roots" is a genre I don't dip into very frequently, but I've really been enjoying this - a mix of cello, guitar and fiddle, with the occasional dash of banjo (Bela Fleck makes an appearance), harp, vibes and even saxophone. It's charming and rootsy and almost a little quirky, and listening to the album has definitely made me want to see Sollee in person again.
Fortunately, I'll have that opportunity tonight. Ben Sollee will be playing a free showcase at the Basement, along with Samantha Crain and The Tallest Man On Earth. The show kicks off at 5:30, so it's a perfect post-work stop, and you certainly can't beat free. Like all shows at the Basement, however - this one is 21+.
Here are two tracks off of Learning To Bend to whet your appetite:
