Playlist - May 26

Monday night's show saw the launch of the 2008 edition of the Summer of Guest DJs - and my first guest of the semester was Glenn Peoples of Coolfer.com.  Glenn and I met when he moved to Nashville two years ago, and while he doesn't really use his music industry blog as an outlet to discuss the kind of music he likes, he has definitely been recommending great bands to me since he and I became friends.  The tentative theme for Monday night's show was "out of print," and Glenn took the opportunity to share some hard-to-find selections from his CD collection.  Go ahead and:

Stream the May 26 edition of Out the Other

And here's the playlist, so you can follow along at home.  I've also added 3 mp3s too from some of the rarer stuff we played:

2.  Brooke Waggoner - Hush If You Must (Fresh Pair of Eyes)
3.  Eric Matthews - The Pleasant Kind (The Lateness of the Hour)
4.  Arnold - Windsor Park (Hillside)

6.  Iggy Pop - I'm Bored (New Values)
7.  Eureka Gold - Peter Oh (Eureka Gold)
8.  American Princes - Real Love (Other People)
9.  Brendan Benson - You're Quiet (Lapalco)
10.  Dramarama - Last Cigarette (Stuck In Wonderamaland)
11.  The Mattoid - Hey Dude (Glory Holy)
12.  Codaphonic - Never Slows Down (The Ballad of Codaphonic)

The Jealous Girlfriends and Sea Wolf @ Exit/In tonight!

The Jealous Girlfriends

The concert calendar has been a little light lately, which means it has been two weeks since I've even been to a show - pretty much the longest I've fallen off the wagon since last December.  But I'm itching for live music and tonight presents an excellent opportunity over at Exit/In - Sea Wolf is in town again, this time with Brooklyn's The Jealous Girlfriends.  I've already seen Sea Wolf - they played Exit/In back in October with Nada Surf and put on an excellent show - but the latter band is new to me, and I'm pretty excited to see them live.

Last month, The Jealous Girlfriends released a self-titled album that I've been spending a bit of quality time with this week in preparation for tonight's show, and the more I listen, the more I love what this band has to offer.  There's a lot of diversity on the disc - it's alternately hazy and dark, sweet and summery, shoegaze-y and poppy at the same time.  I'm even falling for Holly Miranda's enchanting vocals - and if you know me, you know I'll take a male's voice over a female's 90% of the time.  And The Jealous Girlfriends even present the best of both worlds - Josh Abbott shares lead vocal responsibilities, and I'm discovering that I'm a sucker for his vocals as well.

"The Pink Wig To My Salieri"
"I Quit"

And here's some Sea Wolf too if you aren't familiar with them yet.  Last year I was pleasantly surprised to discover that their live sound is even more developed and filled out than I expected - exactly what you'd hope from a band that's fairly subdued on the record.

"Black Dirt"
"Middle Distance Runner"

Tonight's show kicks off at 9 p.m. with Daniel Ellsworth - tickets are $10 and the show is 18+.

Playlist - May 19

Monday night's show was the first of the summer semester, and I have to admit it's going to take a little while to get used to the new late-night timeslot.  The archive actually only picked up the first hour of the show, but that's probably for the best - I won't have to relive the worst of the sleepy tongue-tiedness that hit after 11 p.m.  :)  Go ahead and:

Stream the May 19 edition of Out the Other

Like I said on the show, from here on out I think we're going to transition into the Summer of Guest DJs, Part 2.  I already have my first guest lined up for next Monday, the 26th - Glenn Peoples of Coolfer.com will be hanging out with me on the show and picking out some tunes to share with you guys.  If you're familiar with Coolfer, you already know that Glenn knows his stuff when it comes to the music industry, but you may not know that he's a huge music fan as well.  While he no longer writes about specific bands and artists on his blog (besides what they're up to on the business side of things), he has certainly turned me on to lot of great music since he moved to Nashville two years ago, and I'm excited to check out what he's been listening to lately.

And here's the playlist for this week's show - with a few bonus mp3s to tide you over until next week:

1.  Elbow - Forget Myself (Leaders of the Free World)
2.  Albert Hammond Jr. - In Transit (Yours To Keep)
3.  Toothfairy - Stephanie, My First Crush (Formative)
4.  Good Shoes - We Are Not the Same (Think Before You Speak) (mp3)
5.  Pop Levi - Sugar Assault Me Now (The Return to Form Black Magick Party)
6.  The Jealous Girlfriends - How Now (The Jealous Girlfriends)
7.  Hot Hot Heat - 5 Times Out of 100 (Knock Knock Knock) (mp3)
8.  Sound Team - Your Eyes Are Liars (Movie Monster)
9.  Ian Love - Butterfly (Ian Love)
10.  Nada Surf - Fruit Fly (Let Go)
11.  Robbers on High Street - Debonair (Fine Lines EP)
12.  Dogs Die In Hot Cars - Godhopping (Please Describe Yourself)
13.  Metric - Combat Baby (Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?)
14.  Codaphonic - Call-In Show (The Ballad of Codaphonic)
15.  The Silver Seas - The Broadway Lights (High Society)
16.  Hotpipes - You Burn Or You Don't (Future Bolt)
17.  Heypenny - Secreterror (Use These Spoons)
18.  Parachute Musical - The Black Tie Affair (unreleased promo CD)
19.  LCD Soundsystem - Disco Infiltrator (LCD Soundsystem)
20.  Clor - Love + Pain (Clor) (mp3)
21.  The Bicycles - Two Girls From Montreal (The Good, The Bad and the Cuddly) (mp3)
22.  Walter Meego - Girls (Voyager)
23.  Kings of Convenience - The Build-Up (Riot On an Empty Street)
24.  Ryan Adams - Please Do Not Let Me Go (Love Is Hell Pt 1 & 2)

Out the Other moves to Monday nights!

You may have noticed that the icon at the top of the right-hand column has changed to indicate Out the Other's new home for the summer semester - now you'll be able to check out the show every Monday night from 10 p.m. - midnight!  Kinda late, I know, but I'm assuming most of you kids are relative night owls anyway, and those of you who aren't - well, you can let me lull you to sleep every Monday throughout the summer.

I'm working on starting up the Summer of Guest DJs, Round 2, but in the meantime the first edition of Out the Other After Hours tonight is going to be just me, flying solo.  And while I'll still have the concert calendar and all the great stuff going on in town this week, I'm challenging myself to do something a little bit different for the show.  I'll be straying from the newness to dip deep into my music collection, and I'm hoping to dig out some songs that I haven't been listening to lately, without falling back on the standby favorites that I tend to play whenever I take a break from new releases.

So tune in tonight - that's 10 p.m. central - you can listen live here in Nashville on 91.1 FM or online at wrvu.org!

Monday morning mini-mix (part 20)

It's funny, being a DJ and a blogger has turned me into what I would call a pretty "active" listener - which means that I tend to always be the one choosing what I'm listening to.  I guess that would be a opposed to a more passive listener - someone who listens to the radio more frequently and is less likely to be constantly selecting what they're in the mood to be listening to.

That said, I think being that kind of listener makes me even MORE excited when I hear a great song I wasn't expecting, because familiar music rarely catches me off guard these days.  It's even more exciting when it's a song I had completely forgotten about.  Last night I was digging through CDs planning tonight's show, and I pulled out a mix CD just called "Spoon & Such - 4/25/04."  I had no idea what was on it, so I popped it in my computer - and was hit with this ridiculously great mix of whatever I was probably downloading off of Epitonic four years ago.

Tucked into the middle of the mix was The Mendoza Line's "A Damn Good Disguise" - a track I'm pretty certain I haven't heard in YEARS.  I had completely forgotten about it, and it practically floored me.  I had almost forgotten how incredible that feels.

Here's that tune and a few more from "Spoon & Such":

The Mendoza Line - "A Damn Good Disguise" (from Lost in Revelry)
Kings of Leon - "Wicker Chair" (from Holy Roller Novocaine)
Stephen Malkmus - "The Hook" (from Stephen Malkmus)
Ozma - "The Business of Getting Down" (from The Doubble Donkey Disc)
Spoon - "Jonathon Fisk" (from Kill the Moonlight)

Monday morning mini-mix (part 19)

Some random selections from Sunday's spring cleaning shuffle:

Of Montreal - "A Sentence of Sorts in Kongsvinger" (from Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer)
Nick Lowe - "Nutted By Reality" (from Jesus Of Cool)
The Format - "Tie the Rope" (from Interventions and Lullabies)
Belle and Sebastian
- "Like Dylan in the Movies" (from If You're Feeling Sinister)
Cansei de Ser Sexy - "Music Is My Hot Hot Sex" (from Cansei de Ser Sexy)

TONIGHT - AutoVaughn and De Novo Dahl, plus Spring Hill Spider Party's LAST SHOW EVER

may9

Just a friendly reminder - tonight both AutoVaughn and De Novo Dahl will be at the Cannery Ballroom celebrating their new albums with a dual release show/party that promises to be the best way possible to spend a Friday night.  If you caught my show last Saturday, you've already heard all of AutoVaughn's new EP, The Cycles, (if not you can check out the archive) and I'm sure you're as excited as I am to hear the new tunes live.  And De Novo Dahl's Move Every Muscle, Make Every Sound has already been out for a bit - but the band is headed out on the road tomorrow for a month-long tour with Tally Hall, so you can be sure their warm-up tonight is going to be worth catching.

AutoVaughn - "The Cycles" (from The Cycles)
De Novo Dahl - "Heartbreaker" (from Move Every Muscle, Make Every Sound)

The Pink Spiders are also making an appearance tonight and will be kicking off the show at 9 p.m. (no really, probably right at 9, since rock o'clock tends to come early at the Cannery).  The show is 18+ and tickets will be $10 at the door.

And if THAT weren't enough, after you spend a few hours boozing and dancing with three great Nashville acts, get ready to bid farewell to my favorite local crazy-ass dance party band, Spring Hill Spider Party.  Alas, the band is calling it quits, so their after party performance at the Mercy Lounge tonight will be their LAST SHOW EVER.  Sigh.  Nashville just won't be the same without headlamps and male go-go dancers and Basement dance-offs with creepy kitten posters as the prize.  I think I might cry a little tonight... but to be honest it will probably be because I'm laughing too hard to breathe.  I mean, this will be the last time I'll hear these live:

"Kevin's Bacon"
"This Club is Full of Boys"

The after party kicks off right after the Cannery show wraps up - Jensen Sportag will also be making an appearance to keep the dance party going.  It's free if you paid to get into the show next door, otherwise it's only $5 to get in.

Spring Hill Spider Party 022

May 10 show preview

Swimming

Tomorrow's show is the last Out the Other of the spring semester - on Sunday all the potential summer DJs are meeting to turn in our applications for the summer schedule, which means that after tomorrow, most likely my timeslot will be changing (I should be back to two hours, and hopefully I'll be moving back to a weeknight). To be honest, I'm still not sure what I'm going to play for most of the show, but I definitely have my featured album picked out.

I've been head over heels for French Kicks for quite a few years now, and 2006's Two Thousand was absolutely one of my favorite albums of that year.  I knew we were due for a follow-up in 2008, but when Swimming stealthily appeared on iTunes last month, I was surprised at how quickly it came out.  The album was entirely produced and mixed by the band itself (a first), and while it definitely sounds different than any of their albums to date, it also sounds like the obvious next step down the path from Two Thousand.  Here's the first track:

"Abandon"

Amazing, right?  Swimming won't see a physical release until May 20, but I'll be playing three tracks off of the album on tomorrow's show.  And if you're a French Kicks fan, make sure you mark your calendar for June 10, because they'll be playing Exit/In along with Frightened Rabbit (!!!).

Like I said, I'm not sure what else is on the menu tomorrow afternoon - absolutely the concert calendar and all that fun stuff, but I'll have to spend some time later today choosing some particularly excellent songs.

Tune in tomorrow at 2!

Jamie Lidell - Jim

Lidell Jim

I don't know what it is, but there are times when my taste in music is HUGELY influenced by the weather.  I think everyone is like that to a certain extent - I'm pretty sure you all have your favorite rainy-day records - but for me there are a few times every year when the albums I keep coming back to have everything to do with what's going on outside my window.

Like right now, for instance.  Summer is stretching its sleepy legs and slowly climbing out of bed, and all I want to listen to is whatever is playing on its clock radio.  And for the past week or so that's been Jamie Lidell's new one, Jim - it's exactly what I imagine Summer wakes up to on a sunshine-y Saturday morning.  Slackly funky, soaked in the heat of the first few 80-degree days of the year - it's the soundtrack for that perfect temperature when you can dance barefoot on the lawn without breaking much of a sweat.

"Wait For Me"
"Hurricane"

Jim is out now on Warp Records - and the number of times I've put it on repeat is just about as full an endorsement as you can get.

Monday morning mini-mix (part 18)

Cinco.  You know, de Mayo.

Mazzy Star - "Five String Serenade" (from So Tonight That I Might See)
The Raconteurs - "Five on the Five" (from Consolers of the Lonely)
Miracle Fortress - "Five Roses" (from Five Roses)
The Minus Five - "With a Gun" (from The Minus Five)
Nick Drake - "Day Is Done" (from Five Leaves Left)
