8 off 8th TONIGHT at Mercy Lounge!

8 off 8th flyer-2

In lieu of a Monday morning mini-mix today, you're going to get a nice mp3 preview of all the bands playing at tonight's 8 off 8th at Mercy Lounge !  Which, if you happened to forget, will be hosted by yours truly, along with fellow WRVU DJ/local music fan Joe Baine Colvert of Indie Ghetto (he happens to be a freshly minted blogger too).

Joe and I have an amazing lineup set up for you - including three long-term OTO favorites that I've been talking about for ages, so if you haven't seen All We Seabees, And the Relatives or Hotpipes yet, here's a chance to see all three of them in one go.  And to sweeten the deal, you have another five excellent acts on the bill - some relative newcomers and some familiar Nashville faces - Orange In Circles, Meemaw, Michael Harrell, Esposito and Stories That Live.

Here are the bands in the order that they'll be playing tonight, along with a taste of each via mp3:

Orange in Circles - "My Shaker Mover"
Meemaw - "Fever Dreaming"
Michael Harrell - "Private Joke"
All We Seabees - "Horse"
Esposito - "Wig Out (recorded at practice)"
And the Relatives - "Simulated Blindess"
Hotpipes - "Brain and a Vegetable"
Stories That Live - "Whatever It Takes"

Pretty amazing right?  The show kicks off at 9 tonight (and we will really do our best to make it kick off right at 9), so show up early and stay late.  The beautiful thing about 8 off 8th every week is that it's F-R-E-E, but keep in mind that it's also 21+.

Okay - go check out the tunes, and see you tonight!!!

Anticipation revisited: Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid

Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid

The beginning of the new Elbow album, The Seldom Seen Kid, is rather jarring - the opening track arrives in a cacophony of instrumentation and then alternates between gorgeously undulating sweetness and startling, abrasive horn blasts - making it impossible to find a volume that offers a comfortable middle ground.  In fact, on my first several trips through the record, I found the harsher parts of "Starlings" so.... harsh that I kept the volume low and barely noticed the song.

So how did "Starlings" become my favorite song on The Seldom Seen Kid - a difficult feat considering the wealth of great music on the album? Well, I finally turned up the volume and paid attention to the words.  Strung between those abrasive blasts of sound, floating upon the crest of undulating sweetness, are lyrics that melt me into a romantic puddle:

How dare the premier
Ignore my invitations,
He'll have to go.
So too the bunch he luncheons with,
It's second on my list of things to do.

At the top is stopping by
Your place of work and acting like
I haven't dreamed of you and I
And marriage in an orange grove.
You are the only thing
In any room you're ever in.
I'm stubborn, selfish and too old.

I'm normally not the doe-eyed, sappy kind of listener that likens music to poetry and only cares what's being said - often I'm more susceptible to a particularly heart-wrenching melody or even just a well-placed key change than a series of words.  But sometimes when I'm listening, the lyrics will slowly drift up to break the surface and - wow - suddenly I'm girly goo.  And if "you are the only thing in any room you're ever in" didn't do it for me, the last line of the song - a quietly posed "darling, is this love?" - completely seals the deal.  Yes, Elbow, yes it is.

"Starlings"

So anyway, if you haven't noticed - this is my attempt at revisiting Anticipation, the mix I made back in February when I was looking forward to a number of early 2008 releases.  Of the ten albums I mentioned in that mix, I hadn't heard eight in their entirety at that time, and I plan on stopping to talk about each and every one of the eight now that they're out in some form (I believe Guillemots is the only one of the bunch that isn't out stateside, but it is available as an import).

As for the rest of The Seldom Seen Kid, which is out today on Geffen in the U.S. - I think it's one of my favorites in the list (although I have a feeling I'm going to keep saying that, as I skip from album to album).  It's certainly one I've been spending a lot of time with - I seem to listen to it obsessively for a day, then put it down and come back to do the same thing a week or two later.  It almost feels like I'm excavating the record... slowly but surely digging deeper into the songs, just like I did with "Starlings."  But that doesn't mean it's growing on me slowly - everything sounded wonderful to begin with, and repeated listens just mean the songs start to reveal themselves a little more, strike a more familiar chord.

The verdict?   I think I'm going to continue spending quite a bit of time with The Seldom Seen Kid this year.  The album is a little slower than I expected after initially hearing "Grounds For Divorce" (one of my favorite songs so far this year, hands down), but it's beautiful and multi-dimensional and I'm thinking very, very hard to get sick of.   Absolutely recommended.

"Weather to Fly"

Monday morning mini-mix (part 17)

Blue is my favorite color.

Gomez - "Mississippi Boweevil Blues" (from Five Men In a Hut)
Paul Simon - "Paranoia Blues" (from Paul Simon)
The Features - "A Million Ways To Sing the Blues" (unreleased Mike McCarthy version)
Bob Dylan - "Highway 51 Blues" (from Bob Dylan)
Arcade Fire - "Antichrist Television Blues" (from Neon Bible)

April 19 show preview - Record Store Day!

Midnight Organ Fight

Tomorrow is a day that just might become one of my new favorite holidays.  April 19, 2008 is Record Store Day - a date singled to celebrate all of the independently owned music stores across the country.  Here in Nashville, you know I'm a HUGE fan of Grimey's New & Preloved Music, my neighborhood indie record shop (and the gracious underwriter of my show on WRVU).  In addition to all of the fantastic in-store performances and events they hold over the course of the year, Grimey's also holds two HUGE outdoor parties and sales (one in the spring, one in the fall), and they've chosen Record Store Day as the date of their spring party tomorrow.

So what does that mean?  After the jump, check out the poster listing all of the awesomeness going on at Grimey's tomorrow.  WRVU will be at the the event as well, and I'll actually be heading over to the party after my show tomorrow to hang out at the WRVU table until about 5 p.m.

And what exactly does this have to do with the show?  Well, I'm going to do my part on Record Store Day by giving you a taste of the goodness you can head out and buy at your local independently owned record shop!  And since I plan on hitting Grimey's tomorrow before I head to the station, hopefully I'll be able to share some of the Record Store Day exclusives that different artists are only making available at locations participating in the event.  Sound good?

I'll still be rocking a featured album of the week - this past Tuesday saw the release of Frightened Rabbit's The Midnight Organ Fight, an album I'm madly in love with by a band I was THRILLED to see appear on Exit/In's upcoming shows calendar.  I'll be sharing three songs off the album, but here's a taste first (since I totally can't play this one on the air):

Frightened Rabbit - "Keep Yourself Warm"

Oh and if you live in East Nashville, make sure you check out YOUR friendly neighborhood indie record shop - The Groove. The Groove is still relatively new to Nashville, but they'll be making a big splash tomorrow for Record Store Day with performances by Aaron Robinson, Eureka Gold, The Nobility, Meemaw, JEFF and tons more.  Their full lineup (and details of their awesome sale) can be found here.

Grimey's poster after the jump!

Out the Other and Indie Ghetto present: 8 off 8th @ Mercy Lounge on April 28!

8 off 8th flyer-2

UPDATE:  As you can see, we've done a little switcheroo with the lineup - unfortunately all of the members of The Privates couldn't play on Monday, so Esposito will be playing instead!

Super exciting news... if you've been paying attention to the concert calendar in the sidebar, you may have noticed a pretty amazing lineup at Mercy Lounge on Monday, April 28 (if I do say so myself).  That's because along with Joe Baine Colvert, fellow WRVU DJ and host of Indie Ghetto, I'm going to be hosting my very first 8 off 8th!  It's still a week and a half away, so I'll have more details as we get closer to the show, but here's the confirmed lineup (and what I'm pretty sure is the order they'll be performing):

Orange in Circles
Meemaw
Michael Harrell
All We Seabees
Esposito
And the Relatives
Hotpipes
Stories That Live

If you've never attended 8 off 8th, it's kind of a showcase-style evening where 8 different acts perform for about 15 minutes each.  It's a great opportunity to catch a TON of amazing bands in one night, and Joe and I have lined up some of our local favorites to give you a nice taste of the greatness the Nashville music scene has to offer.  I'm INCREDIBLY excited about this show and I hope you all can make it out - like all 8 off 8th events it's absolutely FREE.

I'll have tunes from all the acts soon, but in the meantime mark your calendars!!

Playlist - April 12 - Pico vs Island Trees and new Features track!

Saturday was a great show - not only did I get to hang out with Bryan and Jeremy from Pico vs Island Trees for most of the hour, I also got a chance to (I'm pretty sure) debut a track off of the brand new Features album that the band just completed!  All around a ton of local goodness, so go ahead and:

Stream the April 12 edition of Out the Other

And since I waited so long to actually post this, now I can say that you can head out to see Pico vs Island Trees TONIGHT - they're going to be playing over at the Basement along with Tommy & the Whale and Heypenny.  It should be an excellent show, and if you dug the poppy goodness you heard by Pico on the show, you should absolutely head out to see them live - they're even more phenomenal in person. The show starts at 9 p.m., it's only a $7 cover, and like all shows at the Basement it's 21+.

And here's the playlist:

1.  The Raconteurs - Consoler of the Lonely (Consolers of the Lonely)
2.  The Features - Lions (Some Kind of Salvation)
3.  Pico vs. Island Trees - Malibu (Ready Confetti)
4.  Hotpipes - Brain and a Vegetable (Future Bolt)
5.  Roman Candle - You Don't Belong To This World (Says Pop)
6.  Hymns - Stop Talking (Brother/Sister)
7.  Pico vs Island Trees - Caution (unreleased demo)
8.  Ricky Young - Poor You (Learn to Steal)
9.  Annuals - Sore (Wet Zoo EP)
10.  Pico vs Island Trees - Open Doors (Ready Confetti)

Monday morning mini-mix (part 16)

There are a surprising number of great songs about Idaho.  And other vowel-y states.

Josh Ritter - "Idaho" (from The Animal Years)
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - "Oregon Girl" (from Broom)
The Four Seasons - "Idaho" (from The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette)
Kings of Leon - "Arizona" (from Because of the Times)
Ox - "Miss Idaho" (from American Lo Fi)

Raconteurs shows moved to Cannery

the raconteurs

Sometimes it pays to actually read myspace bulletins:

The Raconteurs are happy to announce that they've moved venues for their two shows in Nashville on Monday, April 14th and Tuesday, April 15th to accommodate more of their fans.
The shows will now take place at The Cannery Ballroom instead of the Mercy Lounge and tickets for this increased capacity will go on sale via the presale link in the tour date section of theraconteurs.com on Monday at 10 AM CST. There is a 2 ticket limit per person, all tickets must be picked up at will call and immediate entry into the venue is required. All tickets purchased for the shows at the Mercy Lounge will be honored at The Cannery Ballroom and can be picked up at the box office will call.

I was kinda psyched about seeing them somewhere as teeny as the Mercy Lounge, but I know a ton of people who weren't able to get tickets, so it's pretty cool that they upgraded so more people can go.

I'll be there Monday.  Are you going to get tickets?

April 12 show preview - Pico vs. Island Trees

Pico

Adding to the excitingness that is this weekend - I have a special show lined up for tomorrow.  I'll be joined in the studio by Nashville's own Pico vs Island Trees, a band that's been making quite the name for themselves around town in the past few months.  I actually interviewed them back in September before they played the Next Big Nashville festival (you can read that here), before I had ever seen the band and before I really even knew who they were.  Since then, I've managed to catch quite a few of their shows (including an awesome set at SXSW), and I've fallen in love with their energetic, poppy brand of indie rock.  They're an amazingly fun band to see live, and also some incredibly nice guys - plus they're Lost fans, which is always worth a few bonus points in my book.

So the band will be hanging out for the hour tomorrow - we'll be checking out some of their tunes and chatting about what they've been up to lately and the band's plans for the rest of 2008.  We'll also be talking about their upcoming show - they're playing the Basement next Thursday, April 17 with Tommy & the Whale and Heypenny.

Tune in tomorrow at 2!

"Open Doors"

Hotpipes, Howlies and And the Relatives @ The Basement TOMORROW!

Howlies teeth

Tomorrow night, in what I'm already calling "Janet's favorite show EVER" (well, at least until my 8 off 8th at the end of the month), three of my favorite bands are going to be hitting the Basement.  First up - Howlies are back in town from Atlanta, and if you didn't head out to see them the last two times they were in Nashville, you had better come out for this one.  Last October we were treated to furry wolf ears, in January we got awesome costumes, and both shows were a smoke machine-filled, percussion-y, ridiculously good time.  I can't wait to see what they bring tomorrow night.

Howlies - "Angeline"

Also on the bill are two of my favorite local acts, and bands you've heard a TON about here.  If you haven't seen Hotpipes yet - well... I can't even describe how much you're missing out.  With the release of Future Bolt and the past few shows I've seen them play, they've officially earned the title of my favorite Nashville band, and since I haven't seen them since the CD release show, I'm psyched about tomorrow night.  And rounding things out is And the Relatives, a band I've been crazy about since last fall's Next Big Nashville festival - and a band I've been trying to persuade to start playing a hell of a lot more around town.  Their addition to this bill pretty much makes my month.

Hotpipes - "Thunderbolt"
And the Relatives - "Simulated Blindness"

So there you go, three great bands with the fullest of full Out the Other endorsements - it's almost like I lined this show up myself (I actually didn't, but I seriously would have picked the same three bands).  Things kick off at 9 p.m., I believe the cover is a mere $5, and like all shows at the Basement this one is 21+.
