#3. Martin Sexton
From: Boston, Massachusetts
Martin Sexton was one of my favorites during my stint as local music director at WTBU. Since his 1991 debut cassette, In The Journey, Sexton has been garnering comparisons to Van Morrison, Al Green, Otis Redding and Aaron Neville with his soulful voice and smooth sounds. In the massive pool that was the "new folk" scene in Boston, he used his incredible song writing and extensive vocal range to rise above the competition and land a deal with Atlantic Records, which released 1998's The American and 2000's Wonder Bar.
Martin Sexton was in town a few weeks ago - I didn't get a chance to see him so I was thrilled to hear he'll be in Austin in a few months. And I have a feeling that his music will be well-suited for a hot September day. I'm definitely labeling him a must-see.
Here are a few mp3s from Sexton's multimedia page: "Angeline" from Wonder Bar, "Where Did I Go Wrong" and "Beast In Me" from Live Wide Open, and "Black Sheep" from Black Sheep.
Martin Sexton will play the Heineken stage on Saturday from 3:30-4:30.
