I'm kind of enjoying taking a little midnight break from writing these myself to copy and paste a few of my guest submissions, so here's another one from John:
There’s something to be said for tradition. I mean, if your dad was in a band with his brothers, you’d kind of have to be in a band with your brothers, no? Especially if you were backing him up as a solo artist while you were still too young to drive? It all seems to have worked out pretty well for the hermanos Garza, with eldest brother Henry channeling a bit of Stevie Ray, more than a bit of Carlos, singing and playing some harp, JoJo on the bass and yes, Ringo on the drums. (He’s named for his father – how far ahead did this family plan?) Could it get any cooler than having the Archduke of Austin, Mr. Willie Nelson himself, open up his Pedernales studio for you to record your first record? Scoring a number one single (alright, it was adult contemporary, but still) might do, as with 2004’s “Heaven.” Or perhaps a Grammy, not in one of the specialized genre categories, but the highly competitive Pop Performance by a Group or Duo with Vocal category, added to their mantelpiece in 2005.
So even if you don’t know much about Tejano or conjunto, there’s plenty of soul, country, and old-fashioned rock & roll to be had at an LLB show – what the guys call a “musical burrito.” Whatever name you give it, we should all be thankful things didn’t work out in Nashville during Ray Sr’s attempt to break into country music as the first Chicano family band, and the unique blend of styles is a big part of their appeal, especially in a live setting. And since the band hails from San Angelo, a relatively short ride up U.S. 87, this set will be live: they’re going to be playing in front of what amounts to a hometown crowd, to say nothing of Austin’s Latino community, who have adopted them as their own. Expect to hear lots of songs from the band’s second release for Epic, and with two months having passed since the July debut of the highly anticipated Sacred, everything should be fully road-tested and tight as a pair of low-rise jeans after a day of drinking beer.
On a Friday that also features Asleep At The Wheel, Guster, Nickel Creek and John Mayer on the AMD stage, Los Lonely Boys’ 6:30 set may just be the pacesetter. And who knows, if Willie’s home, it’s only 20 miles to Pedernales…
